THE EUMETSAT SATELLITE APPLICATION FACILITY ON OZONE AND ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY MONITORING
TOP STORY:
|
The eruption of Eyjafjalla, Island, emitted sulphur dioxide (SO2), water vapour and aerosols into the atmosphere up to height of 10 km. SO2 and aerosols were measured since April 15, 2010, by the atmospheric sensor GOME-2 (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment) on the EUMETSAT satellite, MetOp-A. The image on left shows the SO2 plume on 9th May, 2010. The SO2 plume had been transported south-eastwards over the Atlantic Ocean, with sulfur dioxide amounts of more than 20 DU.
